Public safety continues to be the City’s highest priority.  La Mirada has once again successfully maintained one of the lowest crime rates in Los Angeles County over the past year. A recent crime analysis of surrounding communities in southeast Los Angeles County and northern Orange County revealed that La Mirada experienced the lowest number of Part 1 crimes in 2018.  Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, larceny, burglary, automobile theft, robbery, assault, and arson.

In 2018, La Mirada experienced 921 Part 1 crimes compared to 1,011 in 2017. This represents an 8.9 percent decrease from the previous year. Of the 921 Part 1 crimes reported in 2018, 832 were crimes involving stolen property.  This accounts for nearly 90 percent of Part 1 crimes reported in that year.  Many of these cases were identified as crimes of opportunity, where valuables were left in plain view.

La Mirada’s history of keeping one of the lowest crime rates in the region is largely attributed to a strong partnership between the Public Safety Team and the community.  This is also achieved through effective crime prevention programs such as the Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch, the Student Attendance and Review program and Positive Alternatives program which educates students about the consequences of participating in delinquent behaviors.  In 2018, the City launched the La Mirada Ring Rebate Program, which enabled 200 La Mirada residents to receive a $100 rebate towards the purchase of a Ring.com product to help secure their home.

“The Public Safety Team continues to analyze crime trends and use technology such as Ring.com to help identify and apprehend suspects,” says Senior Administrative Analyst Mark Rounds.  “We will continue to work with the community to maintain our neighborhood safe.”
